Macular degeneration is an eye disease that affects the elderly. Inside the eye is the macula, an area that allows people to see details and colors.

The most distinctive aspect of this disease is the eye of round spots covering the field of vision so that complicates the frontal view. The details are impossible to see but the peripheral vision is unaffected.
Types of macular degeneration .There are two types of macular degeneration: dry macular degeneration and wet macular degeneration. Up to 90 percent of people diagnosed with macular degeneration have the dry form.

Also, if you have a history of macular degeneration in your family you have a greater risk of developing the disease.  It is advisable to visit an eye specialist with a frequency for preventive care.

Yellow and green vegetables help prevent macular degeneration. Follow a diet rich in vegetables such as cabbage, corn, broccoli and spinach which contain a variety of nutrients and antioxidants. These vitamins and minerals can help prevent macular degeneration in some people.  In fact, some experts believe that this combination of vitamins and minerals is beneficial to the retina of people who suffer from macular degeneration in one eye. This combination of vitamins could slow the formation of drusen in the macula and prevent the disease in one eye affects the other.

An important aspect of eye health is to visit the doctor often. You may suffer from macular degeneration and show no symptoms. A retina specialist can determine if you have any eye disease during an examination with dilated pupils.
